Halima

Entrepreneur

Halima, a Nashville native, mother of 3, and grandmother of 4, became justice involved in the judicial system in 2009. Prior to being incarcerated, she held multiple certifications. While incarcerated, she wrote her business plan for her salon, Step Into Styles Studio. Upon her release in 2012, she vowed that she would always be effective and productive. Halima is now the owner of several businesses. Understanding that after incarceration, everyone deserves a second chance, Halima and a few other individuals now own and operate 3rd Eye Coop with the greatest intentions to employ those who are deserving of a second chance. Being a part of the free world and bondage world, Halima is determined to be the change that she wants to see and be an advocate for those who need it. In the fall of 2019, Halima joined Free Hearts, an organization that is led by formerly incarcerated women that educates, advocates, organizes, and supports families impacted by incarceration. That was also the year Gov. Lee signed and passed the Caregivers Bill created by Free Hearts. Being a part of that event inspired Halima to assist Free Hearts full-time, understanding that her voting rights would never be restored. She became a volunteer/community organizer and now serves as a Trainer/Advocate for the organization in the Direct Service and Participatory Defense division of Free Hearts. She will continue to fight for social justice and community-based alternatives to incarceration and social entrepreneurship.
