LaTonya A. Tate is a national leader, social justice activist, and retired probation and parole officer formerly with the Florida Department of Corrections. She holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Phoenix and a master’s degree in public administration and Policy from the Grand Canyon University. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Alabama Justice Initiative, dedicated to dismantling the mass incarceration probation/parole system that’s affecting and tearing families apart.
LaTonya is also a 2018 George Soros Justice Advocacy Fellow working on Probation and Parole Practices in Alabama, selected by AL.Com Reckon List as one of the top 25 people in Alabama to watch out for in 2019. LaTonya has been featured in theappeal.org, AL.com, Mississippi Summit on Criminal Justice Reform, Justice Roundtable, NYU Bernstein Conference, Alabama Summit on Reimaging Justice, 2019 CLASP Convening, and Selma Jubilee Conference.
In October 2021, LaTonya was elected to the Birmingham City Council to represent District 9, making history by unseating an incumbent. She is the second black female to be elected to the seat and the first black female to Chair Public Safety.
LaTonya is the oldest of four and lives in Birmingham, Alabama. She is the mother of one son, TaDarrius, and a granddaughter, Camille Gabrielle Tate. In her spare time, she likes to exercise, read the Bible, and travel.
